  • Utility Scale 1mw Project

Like most islands in the Caribbean, the Turks and Caicos Islands relies heavily on imported sources of petroleum to operate its electricity generating plants. To reduce this dependency and further increase the penetration of renewable energy sources, FortisTCI will expand its renewable generation in the Turks and Caicos Islands thorough a 1MW utility-scale solar PV project across its service territories. In partnership with global renewable energy consultant Rocky Mountain Institute and its Islands Energy Program, FortisTCI will own and operate five solar PV systems at various sites, comprising of fixed-tilt ground mount-type and rooftop fixed PV systems. These are the first utility scale renewable energy projects the company is developing on the islands.

This project aims to:
  • Expand renewable generation in the Turks and Caicos Islands
  • Diversify the energy portfolio
  • Supplement current diesel generation with solar PV to reduce environmental impact from burning fossil fuels

Proposed Installation Locations:

Island Type of Installations DC Capacity (kWp) Annual Production(MWh)
Providenciales Ground mounted 198 312.9
Providenciales Carport 39.60 66.33
North Caicos Ground Mounted 844.80 1,318
South Caicos Ground Mounted 112.20 188.2
Grand Turk Roof Mounted 33 53.32
Total 1,227.60 1,938.75

These systems are expected to commence in 2020, subject to government planning approval and signing of contracts.
